OPEN SOURCE COMPONENTS

Benefits of open source software include reduced cost and reduced dependency on particular vendors. Open source software has also been proven to be a robust alternative to commercial software and there is a large pool of skilled professionals available. Many components in the Axxerion environment are based on open source technology. These components can be exchanged for commercial software as well.

Linux: Because of its low memory overhead and stability Linux is an excellent operating system choice to run the Axxerion platform. As an alternative to Linux you can also run Windows.
JBoss: JBoss is one of the most widely used open source J2EE compliant application servers. Because of its rich feature set, JBoss is currently the development environment for Axxerion. Other J2EE application servers can be supported on request.
MySQL: SAP DB is an enterprise scale open source relational database with support for transactions. Because Axxerion uses J2EE enterprise beans technology it can also support other databases such as Oracle, SQL Server or Access.
Open Office: Open Office is an open source environment for creating documents, presentations, spreadsheets and drawings. Open Office is used for converting documents to PDF. Alternatively Microsoft Office can be used for this purpose.
Lucene: Apache Lucene is a high-performance, full-featured text search engine library. It is used for indexing documents and full-text search on documents and database records.
IntelliCAD: IntelliCAD is open source 2D/3D computer-aided design software that has native support for AutoCAD DWG. BricsCad IntelliCAD is used to convert CAD drawings to PDF format. As an alternative AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT can be used for this purpose.
Java Advanced Imaging (JAI): The Java Advanced Imaging API (JAI) provides a set of object-oriented interfaces that supports a simple, high-level programming model for image manipulation. These are used for document conversion, web-viewing and markup.
Docbook: Docbook is an open source documentation system to convert XML to HTML and PDF. It is used to generate the Axxerion user manual.

All open source components have been pre-configured and will be provided as part of the Axxerion system software. If you choose to use Axxerion as a hosted service you obviously do not have to worry about these components. The Axxerion software itself is currrently not available as open source software to the general public but source code sharing arrangements can be made.
