TECHNOLOGY

Axxerion is based on the latest Java J2EE technology, which enables support of almost all industry standard databases and hardware platforms. The design complies with a standard Model-View-Controller architecture and takes full advantage of technologies such as session beans, entity beans and transactions. All graphical interaction for designing workflows or annotating documents is implemented using Java applets so no browser plug-ins are required.

Workflow management: With many traditional systems the processes for modifying data are hardcoded and require reprogramming in case processes change. With the Axxerion workflow technology you can interactively design and modify these processes in a graphical environment. The underlying mathematical foundation is Petri Net technology, which enables a formal specification of processes using places, tasks and transitions.
User interface: The user interface is based on the look-and-feel of standard office productivity software such as Access or Outlook. A lot of effort has gone into facilitating fast data entry and viewing by capitalizing on productivity features supported by web browsers. The screens include an online help button that displays a page with a short description of all functions for that page. The interface can be simplified for novice or occasional users by turning off fields or functions.
Reporting: One of the most important requirements for an enterprise system is the ability to quickly create reports. Axxerion has a large number of standard reports for each module. It is also possible to create your own reports. The reports can be viewed directly in the browser and can be converted to PDF so that they can be downloaded and printed. It is also possible to import a report in Microsoft Excel for further analysis.
Import/export: Every organization has legacy information such as lists with persons, employees or assets. With the import module you can quickly import information using a web browser. After a data file has been uploaded you can link the information to objects and fields in Axxerion. This function can be used for importing new information and for updating existing information.
System integration: Axxerion has built-in functionality for integration with other systems such as ERP systems, LDAP servers, Windows applications and mobile solutions. This makes it possible to exchange information in real time and to use Axxerion together with your existing applications. The integration is enabled by webservices technology based on XML/SOAP. This functionality is also available in case Axxerion is used as a hosted solution.
Security model: Axxerion offers a comprehensive and multi-tiered security model based on industry standard best practices. Every user is assigned to one or more user groups. The user groups specify the default access, such as 'full', 'view' or 'none'. These permissions can be refined for individual fields, functions, objects or folders. There are various tools for the administrator to quickly view and modify access rights per module.
Open source: Benefits of open source software include reduced cost and reduced dependency on particular vendors. Open source software has also been proven to be a robust alternative to commercial software and there is a large pool of skilled professionals available. Many components in the Axxerion environment are based on open source technology. These components can be exchanged for commercial software as well.
System requirements: Because Axxerion is a native J2EE application it runs on any platform that supports Java including Windows, Linux and Solaris. The system includes various logical components including a web/application server, a database server, an imaging server, a document conversion server and a file storage. All components interact via the HTTP protocol and can run on different platforms without the need for any platform-specific file sharing software.
Hosting: The Axxerion datacenter is located within the 5000 m2 Easynet/Novaxess building at Schiphol-Rijk. The network, power supply and servers are fully redundant so that Axxerion can offer a high level of availability of the service and a secure environment. High speed connections are guaranteed by a direct connection to AMS-IX and transatlantic links.

The diagram below shows the logical architecture. The various components can run on a single server or on separate servers. The application server can be run in a clustered configuration with session replication and EJB clustering. Load balancing and failover is implemented with Apache with mod_jk.
